A fantasy in an ancient Chinese setting, featuring six stories and six uncanny lives. Year after year, we dread the year's end; day after day, we wait for someone to return.
Shanyue City has amassed wealth over tens of thousands of years. Its lord, Siyou, has lived for a thousand years and, finding all things dull and lifeless, is determined to discover something to believe in so she can pass the long years ahead. Summoned by the Abyssal Court, she comes to the mortal realm to hunt demons and restore peace. From then on, she finds herself caught up in one bizarre event after another. She saves Jiang Shannu, who cannot decide between fish and bear’s paw; Qiao Dangkang, tormented by loving and being loved; Fang Jingjing, who swore she would never love Shen Qiao; Wang Youyuan, who falls in love with Zhang Songhe in the final month of her life; and Qianji and Shutong, who protect each other even as they meet their deaths together...
As she unravels each story, she gradually comes to see herself clearly: how she trapped herself in the past, in the time when she pushed Baili Suo, who had sworn to protect her forever, step by step into someone else’s arms, and ultimately took on the burden of ruling Shanyue City. Those vivid lives, those people who grew through love, unknowingly gave Siyou the bittersweet gift of endless longing. They lit a fire in her heart, helped her understand the love that exists in this world, and gave her the courage to face her own feelings. They awakened the yearning in her heart and set her on a journey to question herself.
