A World History of Culture: A Cultural Sociological Interpretation

This book is one of the classic works by the German sociologist and economist Alfred Weber. From the perspective of cultural sociology, Alfred Weber devoted himself to examining the histories of different cultures and offering a philosophy-of-history interpretation of changes in world culture. In other words, he sought to explain the nature and reality of each culture within the region where it originated, grew, and developed. He divided cultural development into different levels and stages, tracing humanity’s journey from primitive culture through classical culture and on to advanced cultures such as those of Asia and Europe, and finally to modern culture. He returned culture to its native soil and emphasized the role of humanity’s spontaneous creativity in driving history.

Alfred Weber paints a vivid, colorful picture of world cultures, rich in ideas, and reminds us that all cultures interact with and influence one another.
