It can be exciting because of the plot, characters, or writing style, and it can be horror or suspenseful. For a book to be compelling, the overall plot has to be good, and the writing should be decent too. By good writing, I mean the book shouldn’t hit most readers’ major deal-breakers. Anything else is fine.
