Synopsis

Starting from Europe and North America in the 19th and 20th centuries, the author clearly traces the historical evolution of commercial society: at the beginning of the 19th century, most French farmers were still self-sufficient, but now they have been involved in a huge globalized and networked production system. It's quite interesting. Although the beginning is a bit boring, Chapter 9 really points out clearly: Counter-mainstream is also sold to humans by the market. There are traces to follow, and continuous development has led to such a situation. Without the mainstream, there is no counter-mainstream. When the counter-mainstream becomes "mainstream", a new counter-mainstream will be born. People don't care about what they get. They just want to be different, or at least look "different." This is not only a rebellion against the sameness in big factories, but also a search for the meaning of one's own life. Unfortunately, this search only touches on the artifacts and does not go deep into the fields of politics, culture, and thought. Transportation and media facilitated global trade, and from then on, anything could be sold.

The writing style of this book is very clear and well-written, telling the history of consumerism in simple and easy-to-understand language. The author is great.
