Crying Without Tears: The Sonderkommando of Auschwitz-Birkenau

No Tears, Yet Wept: The Sonderkommando of Auschwitz-Birkenau is a scholarly monograph on Auschwitz by Gideon Greif, a renowned contemporary Israeli historian and professor at the University of Vienna. Since its publication in 1999, the book has won widespread acclaim in international academic circles and been translated into many languages. This is the first Chinese translation published in China, and the book runs to around 400,000 characters.

This book is the first to reveal the lives and inner worlds of some of the most unusual victims of the Nazi death factories. The Sonderkommando were Jewish slave laborers selected from concentration camps where the Nazis carried out genocide and forced to work in the gas chambers and crematoria. They witnessed scenes of slaughter that were like hell on earth and were forced to take part, while also enduring condemnation from the outside world. Their bodies and minds suffered immensely. Drawing on years of research and interviews, many of which reveal the subjects' experiences for the first time, the author recounts the Sonderkommando's ordeals and the suffering and struggles of its members with rich detail and rigorous logic. This work is of great academic value both for preserving oral accounts of the Holocaust and for deepening the study of World War II history in China.
