A Global History of Piracy

A Global History of Pirates: From the Vikings to the Somali Pirates is a book by Peter Lehr, a lecturer at the Centre for the Study of Political Research at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. An expert on maritime history and piracy, Lehr offers a detailed analysis of several key questions: Why do pirates emerge, and why are they so hard to eradicate? What similarities and differences can be found among the three major pirate groups along the Atlantic coast, in the Mediterranean, and along China's East Coast? From medieval Vikings to modern Somali pirates, the author delves into the motives behind piracy and how it developed. He shows that pirates are not merely private gangs that roam the seas, looting and killing. They have also served as tools and pawns in the struggles between maritime empires throughout history. The persistence of piracy is rooted in the immense influence of regional geopolitics.
