Synopsis

The Legend of the Sui and Tang Heroes, also known as The Romance of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, tells the story of the final years of the Sui Dynasty. Emperor Yang of Sui is foolish and tyrannical, and the common people suffer terribly. Heroes led by Qin Qiong, Cheng Yaojin, and Shan Xiongxin rise in rebellion, seize Mount Wagang, and resist the Great Sui. The Sui Dynasty refuses to accept its fate and sends troops to attack time and again, but the heroes of Wagang overcome every assault with courage and ingenuity. In the end, the Sui falls amid peasant uprisings across the land. At that point, heroes rise everywhere and carve out territories of their own. Wagang splits apart, and its heroes scatter in every direction. Li Yuan, the governor of Taiyuan, raises an army and founds the Tang with the help of his son Li Shimin. He contends for the Central Plains and gathers the heroes of Wagang under his banner, restoring order to the realm. After a series of wars, he finally unifies the land and establishes the mighty Tang Dynasty. The Legend of the Sui and Tang Heroes features classic scenes from traditional storytelling, including “Rescuing the Emperor at Lintong,” “Qin Qiong Sells His Horse,” “The Seven Stars Revolt at Chang'an,” “The Robbery of the Imperial Tribute,” “Three Ax Swings Secure Wagang,” “The Five Sieges of Wagang Fortress,” “The Fierce Battle at Siping Mountain,” and “The Imperial Jade Seal Is Demanded at Yangzhou.” It also adds new stories, including “The Ominous Prophecy,” “Struggles Between Great Clans,” “Smuggling Salt,” “The Contest for the Vanguard at Youzhou,” “The Purple Star and the Big Dipper Stir Up Chang'an,” “The Uprising at Jinyang,” “The Fierce Battle in Longxi,” and “Eighteen Monks Rescue the Tang King.” It presents a sweeping panorama of the wars at the end of the Sui: grand in scale, full of twists and turns, and teeming with heroes.
