Love in the Golden Years

A middle-aged man nearing fifty runs a small vegetable stall in town. He has an affair with a widow named He Ye, and over time they fall in love. Weng Feng abandons Xia Yu, the wife who stood by him through good times and bad, and marries He Ye. After their wedding, the two of them raise He Ye’s three children together. When Xia Yu is heartbroken after Weng Feng leaves her, a man named Shu Nan treats her with care and consideration. Shu Nan is single too, and the two of them get together. After some time, Xia Yu realizes that Shu Nan only wants to date her and has no intention of marrying her, so she decisively breaks up with him. Weng Feng’s good fortune doesn’t last long either. He loses his appetite and grows thin, so he goes to the hospital for tests. In the end, he is diagnosed with liver cancer. Because he needs frequent chemotherapy and treatment and has no source of income, while He Ye’s family is already struggling with heavy expenses, the two often argue about money. He Ye also feels that Weng Feng’s illness is a bottomless pit, and that all the money they spend won’t cure him anyway. In a fit of anger, He Ye takes Weng Feng back to the home he once shared with Xia Yu and tells her to look after him. Weng Feng had left Xia Yu with nothing when they divorced. Xia Yu doesn’t want to care for him, since he was the one who abandoned her. But in the end, she and her son take Weng Feng around to see doctors and stay with him through the last stretch of his life. After Weng Feng dies, Xia Yu also leaves the town with her son.
