The General's Daughter, the Chancellor's Bride

When I opened my eyes, all I could see was a boundless stretch of barren mountains. I had gone from being the empress of a general's family, who died in childbirth, to the daughter of a chancellor who had willingly severed ties with her family for a man, had no idea where her next meal would come from, and was digging for wild greens in the mountains. I wore rags fit for a beggar. The tattered cloth fluttered in the mountain breeze, and I carried a gray hemp sack that had faded from countless washings and been mended more times than I could count. My throat burned, and a fit of coughing left me unable to catch my breath. I had to crane my neck, face flushed, and open my mouth wide to cough as hard as I could. It felt as though countless sharp knives were scraping my throat, and tears rolled down my cheeks despite myself. What shocked me even more was that, unless I was mistaken, I was carrying a child too. I unconsciously laid a hand on my belly. Tears fell onto my hand, searing my heart. Looking at the few sparse wild greens in my sack, I couldn't help sighing again and again. Fate certainly had a cruel sense of humor. I had once been the rightful empress of the Great Jin Dynasty. I never imagined that, when I went into labor, I would fall victim to a villain's scheme and die along with my child. Looking at the desolate scene before me, I felt wretched. But it was still far better than being the legitimate daughter of a general's household, fighting enemies in the desert while ill. Having inherited the original owner's memories, I felt deeply conflicted about the child in my belly, and even more conflicted about the husband I had never met. But to be reborn in another world was surely a gift from heaven... [In this story, the empress of the fictional Great Jin Dynasty transmigrates into Wang Baochuan, who is digging for wild greens. She has no idea what will happen in the future.]
