This is a one-on-one romance with occasional angst and a happy ending.
A Qi and Xiao Jintang's story of unspoken feelings begins with her capture and his revenge.
A Qi is an assassin. When Xiao Jintang mistakenly believes she has secretly kept an important object tied to the affairs of the imperial court, he captures and tortures her.
To escape, A Qi has no choice but to find the object for Xiao Jintang. From then on, he can't get her out of his mind, and begins a long, difficult campaign to win her back.
After a series of baffling events, A Qi is hunted down. Gravely wounded, she regains her lost memories: she is a princess of the previous dynasty, burdened by a blood feud, and she and Xiao Jintang were betrothed as children.
Xiao Jintang saves A Qi's life, and asks her to repay him by marrying him.
But the world is in turmoil, and powerful factions are all vying for the throne. Xiao Jintang is no exception.
A Qi has to make a choice.
Will she stay by Xiao Jintang's side as his heir's consort, crown prince's consort, or even empress, or remain true to herself and live as she pleases?
Then A Qi runs away, and not just once.
A little scene:
Xiao Jintang: A Qi, you still don't trust me!
A Qi: From now on, I'll trust you, and only you. I'll give you the domain I conquered as my dowry and marry you again. Will you forgive me for running away those few times?
(After saying this, A Qi clings to Xiao Jintang like an octopus.)
The little dumpling pops up: Who is this man?
Third Sister leads the little dumpling away: This is a grown-up's game. You're too young to understand!
