Wang Zhen, a Communist Party member, incites local warlord troops to rise up. At a crucial moment, influenced by the Party's belief that victory could be achieved in one or several provinces at once, he waits for instructions.
During this time, the Central Soviet Area's fifth campaign to encircle and suppress the Communists ends in failure. During the Long March, the Party loses contact with Wang Zhen. Everyone in Wang Zhen's chain of command is killed or goes missing.
To find this important armed force, the Party sends Wang Zhen's younger brother, Wang Yushan, undercover into enemy territory to search for him. The War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression breaks out, and Wang Yushan happens to join the Military Statistics Bureau. He ventures deep into occupied territory, recruits bandit forces, and deftly matches wits with Japanese agents, Manchukuo agents, and Wang Jingwei's puppet-regime agents, engaging in a desperate struggle against the Japanese invaders.
Though Wang Yushan changes his name several times while working for the Military Statistics Bureau, he never forgets the Party's top-secret mission and never gives up searching for Wang Zhen.
Even after victory in the War of Resistance, the struggle continues.
The two parties' covert battle on the hidden front, the gathering of intelligence and the purging of Communist spies, the shifting fortunes on the battlefield and the transmission of intelligence: all these intertwine in a tangled, complex struggle. In the end, as some persist in the fight, some defect to the enemy, and others make the ultimate sacrifice, the dawn of victory in the War of Liberation finally arrives!
