Synopsis

My grandfather, Zhang Songling, courtesy name Huating, died many years ago. This is the story of his life, in his own words. As his granddaughter, I hope this novel and this platform will help more people learn about his story, and that those who find their way to it can gain some insight and experience for their own lives. It is also a glimpse into a turbulent period of history, told from the perspective of an ordinary person. The story covers the years before 1917, the sixth year of the Republic of China, and ends on December 13, 1994. People of my grandfather's generation spoke and wrote concisely, with few details. Later, my father, Zhang Jinsheng, the third son, will fill in some of the gaps. I'll also add my father's experience of spending much of his life in business, along with my own learning journey over the past forty-odd years. This includes not only my studies from primary school through high school, but also learning music at university, and the unexpected experiences that followed when I studied Buddhism and traditional Chinese culture on my own. I hope that the stories of three generations of our family will take you on a journey through the joys and sorrows of an ordinary household over the past century, as history rolls on.
