The Mediterranean War Trilogy is a major work by renowned Japanese nonfiction historian Nanami Shiono. It tells of three great wars in which the Christian and Islamic worlds, two very different civilizations, clashed across the Mediterranean in struggles over faith, territory, and control of trade. These conflicts ultimately changed the balance of power and the course of human civilization: the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Siege of Rhodes in 1522, and the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.
The Fall of Constantinople recounts how the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire, in 1453, as an aging civilization was crushed by a rising one. Situated at the crossroads of East and West, Constantinople was a strategic prize coveted by every power of the age. With its fall, the brilliant jewel of Eurasia changed hands, heralding the start of a new era.
The Siege of Rhodes tells of the Ottoman Empire’s 1522 assault on Rhodes, the Mediterranean stronghold of the Knights of St. John and a frontline bastion against the infidels. It records the last glory of Europe’s dying order of knights: facing the vast Turkish army, a religious order on the verge of extinction fought heroically and left a magnificent mark on history. Though defeated, they won honor.
The Battle of Lepanto recounts the great battle fought in 1571 off Cape Lepanto between the Ottoman navy and the allied fleet of the Holy League, formed by Venice, Spain, and the Papacy. The allied fleet won a sweeping victory, but its fruits soon vanished when the Holy League fell apart in disarray.
These three “battles that divided the world” were pivotal turning points in the development of human civilization and key moments in the course of history. Amid blood and fire, European Christian civilization and the Islamic civilization of Central Asia collided in a dazzling clash. From then on, Christian power steadily declined, while Islamic civilization gradually came to dominate the Mediterranean world and embarked on its rise to supremacy on the stage of history.
Wow, this book sounds so interesting! The author Shiono Nanao showed the conflicts and collisions between different civilizations through three wars, which gave me a deeper understanding of that era. Moreover, the characters in the book are all brave and fight for their beliefs and goals. Their actions are really admirable. I think this book is worth reading and will give people a new understanding and thinking about history.
