The self-defense counterattack against Vietnam refers in a narrow sense to the war that broke out between China and Vietnam on the Sino-Vietnam border from February 17 to March 16, 1979. Broadly speaking, it refers to the military conflict on the China-Vietnam border in the past ten years from 1979 to 1989.
In the mid-1970s, after Vietnam ended its anti-American war and achieved national reunification, it regarded China as its "number one enemy." Sino-Vietnamese relations deteriorated sharply, and the peace and stability of China's border areas and the lives and property of its people were seriously threatened. Under this circumstance, on February 17, 1979, in compliance with the order of the Central Military Commission, the Chinese border defense troops launched a self-defense counterattack against the Vietnamese army that invaded Chinese territory. On March 16, all troops were withdrawn to the country to complete their combat missions. On September 17, the Central Military Commission issued an order awarding honorary titles to 52 heroic model units, 79 PLA commanders and 12 militiamen who fought back in self-defense and defended the border with Vietnam.
