The Three Gorges of History

Since the Opium War began in 1840, Chinese society has entered a turbulent, winding passage through history and begun a slow transformation. Countless leading figures took part, swept into this surging tide of history. They rallied the crowds and rushed to the forefront, as waves overturned boats in a scene of breathtaking danger. They spoke with honesty and acted with integrity, laboring quietly to usher our ancient civilization, little by little, toward modernity. In this book, historian Tang Degang spares neither friends nor the powerful, analyzing the achievements and failings of these historical figures one by one, without bias. His account reveals a clear understanding of the course of Chinese history, as well as a deep concern for the fate and future of the Chinese nation.
