Original Sin

My father once warned me that if I joined the police, I must serve my country. “Be a hero among men in life, and a hero among ghosts in death.”

If I did not join the police, I must not heed others’ misleading words. I should follow my heart and uphold the right path, knowing my own conscience. One careless act can bring trouble to the whole world; one reckless thought can bring a century of calamity.

When passions run high, reason is not always clear, and words and actions can easily go too far. That does no one any good.

I did not understand what those words meant back then. But after seeing the ugliest sides of human nature and criminals stripped of all humanity, I understood.
