In an age when the gods have fallen, two kinds of supernatural power exist: traditional superhumans and those who possess “Soul Remnants.” Soul Remnants are strange objects formed from the lingering obsessions of the dead. They grant power, but also impose limits; to grow stronger, their bearers must fuse with more of them.
The protagonist, Ye Luo, inherits his mother’s “Compass,” which can detect Soul Remnants. Skilled in network technology, he is a “tech-based superhuman.” Seeking revenge on the “Bestiary,” the organization that cruelly manufactures Soul Remnants, he fuses with several of them, including space, shadow, and disguise. He moves through the city in secret, fighting the Bestiary and thwarting its schemes.
He must not only evade the Bestiary’s pursuit, but also stay ahead of the authorities at the “Public Security Bureau,” all while under constant pressure to acquire new Soul Remnants. As the secrets of the remnants come to light, society descends into chaos. With the help of his companion Mo Li, Ye Luo struggles to survive and gradually uncovers the truth behind the gods’ fall and the beast tide. This is a struggle for revenge and survival, and a search for a glimmer of light in the shadows of the city.
