Ancient Chinese Military Texts

This book covers the origins of ancient military treatises; military treatises from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, from the Qin and Han through the Five Dynasties, and from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing; the relationship between military treatises and warfare; and their value and influence. In ancient China, works discussing the art of war were called military treatises, a term that later came to refer to military writings in general. Ancient China saw frequent wars and accumulated extensive experience in military conflict. Its military treatises were vast in number, profound in content, and grand in scope, occupying an important place among the immense body of ancient texts. The book also explores the rise and fall of dynasties throughout history, reunification and the strategies behind it, and eras of peace and prosperity, including wise and enlightened rule.
