Synopsis

The novelist Yan Hongying lived a life like a day of thunder and rain. From the very beginning, life was a miserable struggle for him. Born into a poor rural family, he nearly had to drop out of school because he couldn’t afford the tuition. At school, he was lonely. Poverty was branded on him, making it impossible for him to hold his head high. When his self-esteem was wounded, he encountered literary works that would influence him for the rest of his life. The passion literature awakened in him won him over. After graduating from high school, Yan Hongying knew he had no hope of going to college, so he chose to become a miner. Life in the mines was grueling, and he often came face-to-face with death, living year after year in endless tension and fear. In the midst of spiritual emptiness and anguish, Yan Hongying turned to writing. He wrote the short story “Fisherman’s Song,” a work filled with boundless feeling and displaying a brilliant imagination. After leaving the coal mine and returning to the city, Yan Hongying landed a job as an editor at a literary magazine through a twist of fate. He mixed with writers and scholars, whom he found loathsome and contemptible. His abrasive personality soon made him unwelcome in literary circles, and his novella “The Mirror” was repeatedly rejected. In those bleak days, Yan Hongying met the love of his life. Sheltered by their love, he wrote “Redemption,” a novella from his mature period. In his twilight years, Yan Hongying racked his brains trying to figure out how to heal people’s souls and put an end to the metropolis’s perverse indulgence and its moral decay. In an icy chamber of pain, he built himself a staircase that reached toward a summit he had never climbed: “Revolution.”
