In 2009, sixteen-year-old Yi Xuejia had five friends. Because of their parents, the six children had grown up in the same neighborhood, gone to the same kindergarten, the same elementary school, and the same middle school. Now they were all in their second year of high school. They watched as people around them secretly started dating, while even those who weren't dating had someone they secretly liked.
The six boys and girls looked at one another and wondered aloud, "Why don't any of us have someone we like?"
