Honghong, a young green snake, is sent down to the mortal world by the Snake Queen, Hua Qingshe, to Peach Blossom Mountain in the Penglai Immortal Realm. Her mission is to find handsome men for the Snake Queen to use in cultivating her Serpent Immortal Great Art. The dark-faced Thunder God stops her among the clouds and urges her to abandon evil and do good, but she fears the strict laws of the Snake Queen's palace and dares not obey. The Thunder God is about to strike her with lightning when she is rescued by King Pangu, the Daoist Lord Hongmeng. Because she still has unfinished ties to the mortal world, he sends her down to settle her fated romance so she can devote herself to cultivating the Mysterious Heaven Dao. Along the way are romances between mortals, between immortals in the heavens, and between beings of different kinds, as well as the many hardships Honghong, the little snake demon heroine, faces on her arduous path to immortality.
