Golden Shanghai is set against the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce in the early twentieth century. Its protagonist is a powerful Ningbo merchant who dominates the city, and its main battleground is the financial industry: native banks, commercial banks, and the stock market. The story gradually unfolds as a sweeping portrait of an era, revolving around wealth and ambition, family and country, love and hatred, and the bonds and conflicts between duty and profit.
In 1905, four ambitious young men, Wu Tingju, Fu Shun’an, Chen Jiong, and Zhang Hu, arrived in Shanghai with different dreams. Their circumstances, ambitions, and outlooks sent them down different paths. After failing the imperial examinations, the disillusioned scholar Wu Tingju, steeped in the Confucian ideal of serving the people, joined the drive to save the nation through industry. Starting as an apprentice at a grain shop, he became a financial magnate who controlled Shanghai’s banking industry, hoping to turn the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce into a principled organization that served the people and the nation. To escape his lowly origins as a male performer, Fu Shun’an cast aside his dignity, changed his name, and used women to climb the social ladder. He entered high society, aiming to take control of Shanghai’s banking industry and achieve his dream of fame and fortune. The sinister Zhang Hu apprenticed himself to a Chinese police inspector in the foreign concessions, making his way in Shanghai and seeking to build an underworld empire to serve his own desires. Chen Jiong, meanwhile, devoted himself to the revolutionary cause of overthrowing the Qing dynasty, restoring Shanghai, and creating a new world ruled by revolutionaries...
A decade passed in the blink of an eye. Did they achieve their dreams? Did they reach their goals?
The story of this book is so exciting! It reminds me of a relative of mine who also worked hard in Shanghai and experienced many setbacks and difficulties. The characters in the book all have their own dreams and goals, which resonated with me. I think life should be like them, constantly striving to pursue one's ideals. Also, the historical background of this book is interesting and gave me a deeper understanding of that era. I recommend everyone to read this book "Golden Shanghai". I believe you will also gain a lot and gain insights.
It is magnificent, with ups and downs. A rare good book!
I read the physical book, occasionally saw it here, and read it again. A good novel.
Not bad and fascinating!
It looks good, very good
Not bad, you can keep watching
The structure is clear, very interesting, recommended [smile]
