"Zi Zhi Tong Jian", referred to as "Tong Jian", is a chronological general history masterpiece of unprecedented scale. It records a total of 1362 years of historical facts from the Warring States Period to the Five Dynasties. It uses time as the outline and events as the objectives. It starts from the 23rd year of King Weilie of Zhou Dynasty (403 BC) and ends with the conquest of Huainan in the 6th year of Emperor Xiande of the Later Zhou Dynasty (959 AD), covering 1362 years of history in 16 dynasties. It records a total of 1362 years of historical facts from the Warring States Period to the Five Dynasties. In this book, the editor summarized many experiences and lessons for rulers to learn from. Song Shenzong believed that this book was "in view of the past, it is qualified for governance", that is, it used historical gains and losses as warnings to strengthen governance, so it was named "Zi Zhi Tong Jian".
