The Strange Gate: Longevity Formation

In ancient times, hermits ranked third among the nine upper classes. The Treatise on Recluses in the History of the Southern Dynasties says: “A hermit must preserve his integrity and cultivate his natural virtue, and express himself through learning and the arts. Otherwise, how is he any different from a woodcutter in the mountains?” The term refers to people of extraordinary talent and learning who choose not to serve as officials at court. Zhuangzi, Guiguzi, Zhang Liang, Zhuge Liang, and Liu Bowen were all famous hermits of ancient times. They belonged to no school or sect, yet carried on traditions stretching back through history. Masters of extraordinary skills, they hid away in deep mountains, deserts, forbidden lands, and even neon-lit cities. My own encounter with hermits began with a shocking incident.
