Strange Tales from Japan

Japan is a country with a long history, deeply influenced by Chinese civilization. Tales of the supernatural have circulated in Japan for almost as long as the country itself has existed. Japan has a great many kinds of yokai, most of which originated in China. But through their own rigorous reinvention, Japanese yokai eventually surpassed their predecessors. In modern Japan, this has given rise to a consumer culture centered on yokai, with books, comics, films, TV dramas, and games appearing one after another. After returning from Thailand, Pumpkin and Mooncake's terrifying journey was far from over. On the road ahead, they encountered events even stranger and more uncanny: a black coffin lying aboard a luxury cruise ship, a lantern-bearing child wandering a crossroads at midnight, an old woman who smoked and devoured lives deep in the mountains, and a mysterious fox spirit and mountain hag appearing beneath Mount Fuji... More stories of sorrowful beauty and lingering grief unfold in Strange Tales of Japan. This distinctive novel unveils Japan's mysterious culture. It is also a Japanese version of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, presenting readers with folk tales steeped in the unique character of Fusang while revealing a hidden historical panorama never before brought to light.
