The Paper Figures I Made Came to Life

My name is Ye Kong. I was an apprentice at a funeral-paper shop. Later, my master died, and I became the shopkeeper.

At last, I could make paper effigies the way I wanted.

Among practitioners of this craft, my idea was taboo.

While my master was alive, he often warned me, “Yezi, never make a paper effigy too lifelike. Whatever you do, don't...”

After my master died, no one was there to watch over me, so I made the effigies as lifelike as I possibly could.

That night, I felt someone standing beside my bed for a long time
