He was a scholar, an adventurer, perhaps a member of a secret society, a busy political stirrer, a gambler and, as he tells us, a vagabond by birth. The man, now remembered for his written account of his life, was a rare autobiographer. His father was a member of Columbus's voyage team. His life made the whole of Europe excited. This novel and its characters are purely fictitious. Any similarity is purely coincidental and should not be imitated.
