The story is told of a man who in his youth conceived a vast plan, and who, in his time, persisted steadfastly in that plan, despite encountering obstacles that would have discouraged an ordinary man, suffering the most severe hardships, encountering threats to his life, shipwrecks, physical illness, poverty, The attacks of vicious enemies, the shameful calumnies, the humiliation of being sent in shackles to Spain by Bobadilla, his jealous and cruel rivals, the ingratitude and dishonesty of the King of Spain, yet he accomplished a greater purpose than that which at first inspired him, for he died not knowing that he had discovered a new continent.
