Yang Wenyu, a graduate of Zhijiang University and a descendant of the Yang Family Generals, is ordered to return to the Northern Song Dynasty to search for the Renzong Secret Records. He studies under the Immortal Ziyang and eventually becomes an investigating censor. He leads troops into battle, roaming across the Northern Song, Liao, and Goryeo kingdoms. He shares a once-in-a-lifetime romance with Empress Dowager Xiao of the Khitan and Empress Dowager Cheonchu of Goryeo, among others. He later returns to the present day to become director of the Supervision Bureau, bringing a series of corrupt officials to justice and becoming embroiled in a string of bizarre and amusing events.
