In 221 BC, Ying Zheng conquered the six states, unified the realm, and ascended the throne as emperor. That year marked the beginning of his reign. In the same year, the leader of the Hundred Schools, the Supreme Dao, grew so powerful that it threatened the emperor. The First Emperor cracked down on it, splitting it in two. The two branches vanished into the north and south, withdrawing from worldly affairs. The southern branch settled in Yue, where its followers understood the mysteries of Heaven and Earth, wielded invisible swords, and commanded ghosts and spirits. It became known as the Shangqing Dao. The northern branch went into hiding in Yan and Zhao, mastering talismans and incantations and cultivating the art of the "True Words." Their words took effect as spells, and they could even summon divine beings to exorcise demons and ward off evil. They became known as the Taiyi Dao.
