Come Back to the Pond with Me

Based on historical figures: Chiang Kai-shek, Chen Jieru, and Soong Mei-ling.

The story will also feature the Four Handsome Men of the Republic of China.

I have always been fond of the prosperity of that era and of Chen Jieru, so I wrote this story for her. I hope readers will forgive any inaccuracies.

He is Murong Chen, an arrogant warlord and commander.

She is beautiful and talented, yet has fallen into a life of prostitution.

He once said he would give her the whole world, but then he abandoned her.

It is just like the tale of Wujiapo. One cannot help but sigh that Xue Pinggui had at least a little conscience: after eighteen years, he had not forgotten Wang Baochuan. But what good is such conscience?

He left his wife forgotten and ignored, while enjoying wealth and glory for eighteen years. Then, remembering how his poor wife had waited in a cold cave all those years, he made her empress. It was all so contrived. Yet even this contrived gesture was something he could not give her, leaving her alone for her entire life.

She could have chosen not to wait for him, but she did. Not because she hoped he would change his mind, but because she wanted to see China united and his grand ambitions fulfilled...
