Sunny El

The sun was warm, flowers bloomed everywhere, and specks of light filtered through the leaves, dappling the ground.

Perhaps the sun was the only warm thing in this world!

Little El walked beneath the trees lining the school grounds, his worn backpack slung over his right shoulder. He was nine years old and in third grade. The bright red scarf around his neck fluttered in the cool breeze, swaying against his chest.

He raised his eyes and squinted up at the blazing sun, striving to reach for that glimmer of light.
