The Domineering New Star

In the 1960s, to cope with the complex international political situation and the possibility of large-scale military conflict, the Chinese government adopted the strategic policy of "digging deep tunnels, stockpiling grain, and preparing for war and famine." One of its key steps was to build industrial bases, especially military industrial bases, in the remote mountainous regions of western China and southern Anhui. The aim was to preserve industrial production capacity in the event of war. Among the public, these arms factories were known as "Third Front factories." They had all kinds of facilities, including hospitals and schools, and even produced and sold their own food locally, forming completely self-contained little societies. After the Cultural Revolution ended and China entered the era of reform and opening up in the 1980s, these factories began shifting to the production of civilian goods instead of manufacturing weapons exclusively for the military. Their once-closed environments gradually opened up, and the people working in these arms factories began to have opportunities to encounter the outside world.
