The story takes place in the 1980s and 1990s, in a remote northern village called Chenjia Village and the surrounding hamlets. Communications are poor and material goods are scarce. Most people spend their lives farming, bent over the earth from dawn to dusk. A monthly wage of a few dozen yuan is considered a rare stroke of luck, and a large Jiefang truck is a rare sight across all the nearby villages. Decades earlier, famine and poverty left many ordinary people struggling to afford even food and basic medical care. Driven to the brink of survival, the protagonist's elders defied the family rules and secretly learned the uncanny arts left behind by Granduncle San in order to make a living. This set in motion twenty years of family bloodshed and karmic consequences, drawing an otherwise ordinary farming family into the whirlpool of the occult underworld and fate.
