The Ledger Retriever of the Old Yellow River Course

Weichuan lies beside an old course of the Yellow River. Its waters yield sunken silver and bleached bones, as well as old debts of cause and effect that have entangled generation after generation. A young man travels the countryside with a ledger of karma. The villagers say he can subdue demons and drive away evil spirits, but only he knows the truth: there are no inherently wicked monsters in this world. Every strange and uncanny event stems from the debts people owe in their hearts. Floodwaters surge, secrets buried in ancient villages are torn open layer by layer, and feuds from a century ago drift back into the present with the river. Sharp-tongued and fond of watching the excitement, he nevertheless holds fast to his principles, settling old debts one by one. When the accounts are finally cleared and the great river grows calm, the people of Weichuan will understand that the hardest demon to subdue has always been hidden in the human heart.
