My Surname Is Pan, and I Call the Shots in My Own Life

She died beneath Wu Song's blade, eyes open, refusing to confess.

The underworld wouldn't take her, and the Judge wouldn't try her. Instead, a karma mirror was pushed before her. She would have to see three lifetimes before her guilt could be decided.

She was shoved into the mirror, becoming, again and again, women written into the history books and legends: Xia Ji, wandering through seven kingdoms, called a femme fatale by everyone, yet living to seventy and dying peacefully; Huo Xiaoyu, vowing to become a vengeful ghost and punish her faithless lover, whose resentment came to fruition, but who perished first; Meng Lijun, disguising herself as a man to become chancellor, relying on no man and working until she coughed blood; You Sanjie, who drove a sword through her own throat just to prove she was no wanton woman.

Pan Jinlian awoke inside them, feeling their breath, humiliation, fury, and choices. She thought she was there to see other people's sins, but in every mirror she found her own reflection.

The Judge offered no explanation and asked no questions about her guilt. At the end of each lifetime, he asked her just one thing.

And Pan Jinlian noticed that the Judge's fingers sometimes curled ever so slightly.

Five hundred thousand words, six volumes of karma mirrors. She would not confess, apologize, or make peace. She wanted to know just one thing: who, exactly, had written their stories?
