I Am a Stone, and I Have Seen Every Secret

I am the first stone born when the world was created.

Pangu split the heavens and earth upon me, and Nuwa mended the sky with me. I have witnessed ten thousand dynasties rise and fall. The emperors and ministers who once trod upon me have all turned to dust. But I cannot speak or move. I can only watch.

Until one day, something inside me cracked. It leapt out and became a monkey.

Later, I heard that the monkey had wreaked havoc in the Celestial Palace, been imprisoned beneath a mountain for five hundred years, and then followed a monk westward.

They called him Sun Wukong.

No one knows he is a part of me. No one knows I am a stone that remembers everything.

A disgraced celestial official who had been cast down to the mortal world found me. He lay against me and heard my memories.

He heard a story older, quieter, and more brutal than Journey to the West.

In that story, Sun Wukong didn’t know I existed.

But he should have.

Because I remember him. I remember him from when he was still an egg of stone.
