Ethereal Journey to the West

What do the eighty-one tribulations of the Journey to the West really represent? And why, with the help of Patriarch Bodhi, did Tang Sanzang invite a band of rebellious fighters to head west once more and seek guidance from the Buddha Tathagata? Alas, the compassionate Buddha and Bodhi went to the Yellow Springs together, vanishing from the Three Realms. To find the true answer to becoming an immortal and a Buddha, Tang Sanzang began saving all living beings in his own way. He chose the powerful, the wealthy, the beautiful, the talented... In all, he selected eighty different attributes, both material and spiritual, then added one attribute of his own: gods and Buddhas. With these, he set out to save the world and ultimately became a Buddhist patriarch, satisfied at last.
