Siheyuan: I, Bang Geng, Hunt Rabbits in the Back Hills from the Start

After transmigrating, Jia Geng becomes Banggeng, the despised little thief of the courtyard compound. From the start, he is on the verge of death with a raging fever. His grandmother, Jia Zhangshi, wails in despair; his mother, Qin Huairu, holds his burning hand; and his two little sisters lean over the bed, calling him "big brother"... The family owns nothing, and 27.5 yuan a month has to feed five people. At their lowest point, he awakens a portable space: its spirit fields can grow ginseng, and mysterious green grass has an irresistible effect on wild rabbits.

As soon as he recovers, he grabs a wire snare and runs to the hills behind the village. He catches a five-jin rabbit first, then a second, then a third... Ten rabbits in half a day. At the black market, a jin of live rabbit sells for four yuan, an outrageous price compared to the six-yuan pork ration ticket. He trades a plump rabbit weighing three jin and four liang for 13.6 yuan. Standing dumbfounded at the alley entrance with the cash in his fist, he realizes Qin Huairu only earns 27.5 yuan a month.

As mother and son sneak up the mountain in the dark to set new traps, Qin Huairu rubs her son's head and smiles for the first time: "These rabbits are worth half a month's work for your mom." Jia Geng clutches the more than fifty yuan in cash and eight rabbits stored in his space, and stares at the chimney of the distant steel mill. Silly Zhu, Xu Damao, Yi Zhonghai...

From today on, I'll be the one holding this family together.
