Espionage: A Lawyer Arrives in Shanghai and Unleashes an Economic Storm

In 1938, criminal defense lawyer Gu Yansheng transmigrates into the body of an underground Communist Party member. The organization sends him to Shanghai to raise funds: infiltrate the puppet regime and become an intelligence source.

He knows the fastest ways to make money are all written in the criminal code.

But on his first day in Shanghai, his team leader is arrested and his contact betrays them. His partner, He Yun, slips him two gold bars. "If I can't hold out under torture, run."

Gu Yansheng doesn't run. He makes four anonymous calls, tipping off four newspapers about the explosive story that the French Concession is secretly colluding with Japan. The next day, all Shanghai is in an uproar. The French lose face, and the hostages are safe for now.

Next, he lands an offer from a British-owned law firm through a no-money-down deal, then borrows five hundred silver dollars from his boss for bail. His partner stares at him in disbelief. Gu Yansheng opens the criminal code and smiles. "The most profitable businesses are all on the prohibited list."

There are no gunshots on the economic front. Every penny is a bullet, and he uses the enemy's rules to build himself a gun.
