Siheyuan Registrar: I Rise Through Social Connections

I transmigrated in 1959 and became a warehouse clerk at a steel mill.

Everyone in the courtyard thought it was a miserable job, spending every day dealing with sacks of grain.

But I was thrilled!

In those days, whoever controlled the warehouse controlled the lifeline!

I built connections at the mill while making friends in the courtyard.

Yan Bugui kept watch for me, Liu Haizhong backed me up, and Silly Zhu and Silly Mao served as my muscle.

Not because I was such a good person, but because I understood the meaning of trading favors.

The Jia family wanted to scheme against me? I made sure they couldn't get by in the courtyard.

Yi Zhonghai wanted to guilt-trip me? I ruined his reputation.

You say I'm a schemer? That's right, I schemed against you. So what?

Somehow, my scheming made me the youngest section chief at the steel mill.

Somehow, my scheming made me a deputy director with real power during the decade of turmoil.

Somehow, my scheming made me a business tycoon after reform and opening up.

Jia Dongxu died, Qin Huairu went mad, and Yi Zhonghai froze to death beneath a bridge.

Meanwhile, I stood at the ceremony marking Hong Kong's return, surrounded by reporters clamoring for interviews.

Old and young folks of the courtyard, tell me, should I have schemed against you?
