The One Who Calculates Your Fate

When I was born, I drank wolf's milk for several days, and I came to think of that wolf as my mother. I thought I'd never see her again, until one day a woman came looking for me. Her eyes were red, and she clutched a tuft of gray fur in her hand. Her voice trembling, she said, "Child, the one who saved you on that snowy night was the mother wolf I've watched over for half my life." She told me the wolf had stayed at the village entrance, refusing to leave, howling night after night toward my home. Now she was too old to walk, so she had sent the woman to see whether I was still alive and well.
