Volume One: The Star Raft Crosses the Snowy Plateau

Chapter One: The Magistrate of Huangshui County Receives a Strange Edict

A poem says:

A vermilion decree descends from the ninth heaven; a star raft crosses snowy waves over ten thousand miles.

Mountains and rivers conceal the sun and moon within a sleeve; wind and rain rise from the brush, stirring dragons and serpents.

Buddha's light appears before Vulture Peak; sword energy soars atop Kunlun.

Do not say a scholar lacks courage: one man can make Tianzhu pay tribute.

Chapter One: A Night of Rain in Rongzhou, an Encounter with a Stranger

In the spring of the sixteenth year of Zhenguan, rain tapped at the windows of the rear hall of the Huangshui County yamen in Rongzhou, Lingnan.

After reviewing the last document concerning grain transport, County Magistrate Wang Xuance rubbed his aching wrist. In the wavering candlelight, he suddenly saw the bamboo shadows outside the window thrashing about, as though a figure had darted past. Without betraying his alarm, he placed his left hand on the horizontal saber beneath the desk and picked up a copper coin with his right.

"What admirable composure, Magistrate Wang." A clear, cheerful laugh came from the beams above. A man in green robes drifted down, without even setting the wind chimes beneath the eaves ringing.
