Ingredients

This novel mainly tells the story of two young intellectuals, Zhen Xinmin, who came from a poor and lower-middle peasant family, and Wei Wuxin, who came from a landlord's family. The two protagonists received different treatment in society because of their different family backgrounds. Zhen Xinmin, who was born in a poor and lower-middle peasant family, received organizational training and attention no matter during the Cultural Revolution, especially after educated young people went to the mountains and countryside or recruited workers into the city to work in the society. Wei Wuxin, a third-generation educated youth, suffered humiliation in an era that emphasized class struggle just because he was born into a landlord family. Although the protagonists Zhen Xinmin and Wei Wuxin were born into poor and lower-middle peasant families and into landlord families with different backgrounds, they were both a new generation of intellectual youth who grew up in traditional Chinese family education of integrity, hard work, and kindness. They shared the same ideals and pursuit of values, and finally came together in a special social environment to form a new generation of families in the Republic.
