The Mystery of Majia Village

The Beauty's Ordeal: A Curse on a Beauty in Troubled Times

In 1644, as the Ming Dynasty falls, the famous courtesan Chen Yuanyuan falls in love with General Wu Sangui. Wu settles her in Majiazhai, unaware that the village chief, Ma Bao, is secretly performing evil sacrificial rites to extend his life with the souls of women. Chen Yuanyuan discovers that she is to be the sacrifice. Meanwhile, Wu Sangui mistakenly believes that Li Zicheng has taken her, and in his fury, surrenders to the Qing and marches through the pass.

Chen Yuanyuan exposes the plot, and Wu Sangui risks his life to save her. During the ritual, she smashes the evil mirror and breaks the curse, but the toll on her life force leaves her with little time to live. The two retreat to Yunnan, where they enjoy a brief period of peace. In the end, Chen Yuanyuan dies protecting Wu Sangui. Years later, as Wu Sangui launches a rebellion against the Qing and faces defeat, he sees Chen Yuanyuan's spirit welcoming him. At last, their souls are reunited.
