The Unregistered Awakened One

Between the hum of the incubator and the creases in the maternity ward bill, a baby opened eyes that reflected the universe.

From the blue violence of the C-section lights to the digital cage beneath the glass dome of the neonatal ICU, this baby, diagnosed with "delayed development," used hypersensitive senses to decode the world's original code. The father's credit card payment reminders became a broken lullaby. The mother's postpartum depression turned into the bitter almond taste of her milk. The unrepaired crib rail fractured beneath the moonlight into hieroglyphs from the Bronze Age.

When the umbilical cord scab was preserved in resin and the baby's fine hair was mixed with strands containing traces of antidepressants, this silent observer began piecing together a hologram of the family's hidden side amid the "tropical rainforest" of a damp diaper and the sonic tidal wave of stock market broadcasts. The grandmother's prayers to ward off evil concealed a wartime love letter. The maternity center's starry sky was actually a flickering ceiling light malfunction. And the price of the baby's first smile was the parents' final kiss, frozen forever in the surveillance footage.
