The Ways of the World in Journey to the West

The 108,000-li Journey to the West undertaken by Tang Monk and his disciples is also a journey of cultivation through the human affairs of the Three Realms. This book takes the Eighty-One Tribulations as its framework and the network of relationships among immortals, Buddhas, demons, and monsters as its warp, revealing the realities of the Journey to the West that are hidden behind the Golden Cudgel's brilliance. The cassock dispute at Guanyin Monastery conceals factional strife within Buddhism; the Ginseng Fruit banquet at Wuzhuang Temple is really a struggle of interests between the Earth Immortals and the Celestial Court; and behind the Banana Leaf Fan at Flaming Mountain lies a shift in power within the Bull Demon King's family. Using the Ming Dynasty bureaucracy as its model, the author compares the ranks of the immortals to the imperial court and treats demon lairs as the martial world. Beneath the solemn majesty of gods and Buddhas and the fearsome faces of monsters, the book writes a guide to human affairs spanning Heaven, Earth, and the mortal realm. From the Celestial Court's hidden motives for holding back during Sun Wukong's Havoc in Heaven to the reshuffling of the Buddhas' ranks after Tang Monk returns from his pilgrimage, every auspicious cloud and every gust of demonic wind conceals lessons in human nature that have remained unchanged for a thousand years.
