Conquering Fang La

During the Xuanhe era of the Northern Song, Emperor Huizong's court greatly expanded the Flower and Rock Collecting program, leaving the people of Jiangnan in unbearable misery. Fang La, a lacquer-garden owner in Qingxi County, Muzhou, rallied the people under the banner of Manichaeism and launched a revolt. Within ten days, his followers numbered a hundred thousand, capturing cities and territory and shaking the southeast. The imperial court first sent Tong Guan to suppress them, then called in Song Jiang and former members of the Liangshan Marsh to fight alongside the army. An age of great conflict, one that would decide the fate of the realm, had begun.
