Spirits on a Rainy Night: The Mystery of My Mother-in-Law’s Bizarre Death

After graduating, intern Li Youping arrives in the provincial capital and rents a room in a village near a factory. His landlady, Sister Liu, has a mother-in-law in her eighties who has been paralyzed for years and is no longer quite in her right mind. One evening, Li Youping comes home from work and sees the old woman suddenly go berserk, screaming in terror, "It's here again!" She struggles and falls over. After ten that night, in the rain, the old woman once again ends up on the ground, wheelchair and all, despite being alone. Stranger still, though paralyzed, she gets to her feet with a broom and swings it around as if fighting something invisible. She screams and rants all night. At dawn, Li Youping is woken by a commotion outside his window and learns that the old woman has died. At the funeral, Sister Liu and her husband do not cry. What lies behind this series of bizarre events? What did the old woman see before she died? What secrets are hidden beneath it all?
