The One That Got Away

I will never forget the catastrophe that struck in the summer of 2122.

In the first few days of July, as summer began, temperatures were already over 40 degrees.

Because of electricity rationing, my company told us to work from home.

I cranked the air conditioner up to full blast, surrounded myself with cans of cola and slices of watermelon, and held an ice cream in my left hand and iced coffee in my right.

I even prayed to heaven, hoping there would be more days like this.

I don't know if I hadn't made my prayer clear enough, or if heaven misunderstood me, but the heat lasted for two whole months.

What happened next took me completely by surprise.
